There's a particular kind of magic that happens when you pair a day wandering through America's largest private home with an evening spent around a campfire along the French Broad River. That's the Biltmore weekend we had in mind when we built Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins, and it's the one guests keep coming back for.
If you've been searching for Asheville cabins near the Biltmore that actually feel like something different, something that isn't just another cookie-cutter hotel room or a vacation rental in a random neighborhood, you're in the right place. Wrong Way is Asheville's only outdoor hotel, and we happen to sit just 2 miles from the gates of Biltmore Estate. That's a five-minute drive, or a really pleasant bike ride if you're feeling adventurous.
Why Wrong Way Is the Best Basecamp for a Biltmore Estate Visit
Most people planning a Biltmore trip start by looking for “cabin rentals near the Biltmore in Asheville, NC” and end up scrolling through dozens of listings that all look the same. Big house in a subdivision. Nice enough, sure. But it doesn't exactly set the tone for an Asheville adventure.
Wrong Way is a different animal entirely. Our modern A-frame cabins sit along the French Broad River greenway, tucked into a property that blends the warmth of Appalachian cabin culture with clean Scandinavian design (we call it "Scappalachian," and yes, we're proud of that). Each cabin comes with a real bed, a private bathroom, HVAC, WiFi, a mini-fridge, and a microwave. You get the comfort of a boutique hotel with the feeling of actually being outside.
And here's the thing about our location: we're not just close to Biltmore. We're close to everything. The River Arts District is 1 mile away. Downtown Asheville is 3 miles out. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a short drive. So your Biltmore weekend doesn't have to be only about Biltmore. It can be about all of Asheville.

Planning Your Biltmore Day: Tips from the Locals
Biltmore Estate spans 8,000 acres, and there's genuinely more to do than most people realize. A self-guided audio tour of the 250-room Châteauesque mansion takes about 90 minutes, but that's really just the beginning. Here's how we'd spend the day if we were you:
Morning: The House and Gardens
Book a timed entry for as early as possible. Seriously. The estate opens its doors in the morning, and the earlier you arrive, the fewer people you'll be navigating around in the hallways. Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be on your feet for a while, moving through the banquet hall, the winter garden, and room after room of period furnishings that make you feel like you accidentally time-traveled.
After the house tour, head outside to the formal gardens. If you're visiting in April or May, the Biltmore Gardens are at their absolute peak, with spring flowers blooming across the grounds and views stretching out toward Pisgah National Forest. The conservatory is worth a stop too; it houses orchids and cycad plants that date back to the Vanderbilt era.
Afternoon: Antler Hill Village and the Winery
By early afternoon, make your way to Antler Hill Village. This is where you'll find the Biltmore Winery, and tastings are included with your admission ticket. Grab a glass, browse the shops, and if you're hungry, the estate has several dining options ranging from casual to the more refined Dining Room, where you can sit down for afternoon tea with scones and clotted cream.
For the more adventurous, Biltmore also offers horseback riding, over 22 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a Farm to Table Tour that takes you behind the scenes of the estate's working farms and vineyards.
Evening: Back to Wrong Way
This is where your day takes a turn that no on-site Biltmore hotel can match. Drive the five minutes back to Wrong Way, and you're sitting by a campfire along the river. No TV to distract you (we left those out on purpose). Just the sound of the French Broad River, the glow of the fire, maybe a book or a board game, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the mountains in the first place.
We notice guests spending their evenings reading, playing games together, sparking up conversations with our team and other guests, and getting a more full night of rest with fewer distractions. That's the whole idea.
The Best Time to Plan a Biltmore Weekend
Biltmore is a year-round destination, but the experience shifts with the seasons, and so does the vibe at Wrong Way:
- April and May: Spring flowers are in full bloom at the Biltmore gardens, the NC Arboretum, and throughout the Smoky Mountains. The weather is warm enough for river walks but cool enough that you'll actually want to sit by the fire at night. This is arguably the prettiest time to visit.
- June and July: Rhododendrons and azaleas light up the Blue Ridge Parkway. River outfitters are in full swing for tubing, kayaking, and rafting on the French Broad River. Long days mean more time outside.
- October and Early November: Fall leaf season. The mountains turn every shade of orange and red, and the drive from Wrong Way to the Parkway is unforgettable. Book early because everyone else has the same idea.
- November and December: Biltmore's Christmas lights are legendary. The estate and the NC Arboretum both put on holiday displays that are worth the trip alone. Wrong Way makes a cozy home base for the season.
- January and February: The quietest months. Smaller crowds, lower lodging costs, and a more intimate experience at both Biltmore and Wrong Way. If you don't mind cooler temperatures, this is the insider move.
Bring Your Dog Along
One more thing that sets Wrong Way apart from most cabins near the Biltmore Estate: we're dog-friendly. Your pup is welcome in our cabins, and the French Broad River greenway right outside your door is a fantastic place for walks. Asheville is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the Southeast, so you won't have trouble finding restaurants with patios, trails that welcome four-legged hikers, and shops that put out water bowls. Check out our pet-friendly cabins page for the full rundown.
Beyond Biltmore: Building Out Your Weekend
A Biltmore visit is a full day, easily. But if you're staying for a long weekend (and you should), here's how to fill the rest of your time:
- River Arts District (1 mile from Wrong Way): Wander through working artist studios, grab coffee, and pick up something original to take home. This is Asheville's creative heart.
- French Broad River adventures: From May through September, local outfitters offer whitewater rafting, tubing, and kayaking. Some rafting trips are available as early as March and as late as October. Check out our full guide to outdoor activities near Asheville.
- Blue Ridge Parkway: Drive it, hike it, pull over at every overlook. The Parkway is one of those experiences that never gets old, no matter how many times you've done it.
- Downtown Asheville (3 miles away): Restaurants, breweries, live music, and street art. Walk around and let the city surprise you.
The beauty of staying at Wrong Way is that you're positioned right in the middle of all of it. Biltmore to the south, downtown to the north, the river at your feet. It's the kind of location that turns a good trip into a great one.
