Asheville,
North Carolina
Most hotels tolerate pets. They'll take your dog, but there's a weight limit, a breed restriction, and an unspoken sense that you're causing an inconvenience. Wrong Way River Lodge operates differently. We built an outdoor hotel for people who want to be outside, and we know that for many of you, being outside means bringing your dog. So we made it simple: dogs are welcome. No weight limits. No breed restrictions. No side-eye from staff when you walk through with a Great Dane. There’s even an interior green space for you to walk your dog on property. Your dog is part of your trip and your family. We treat them that way.
Dogs welcome. All sizes, all breeds. Reasonable Nightly Pet fees for well-behaved dogs. Leash required in common areas and on the greenway. Dogs may not be left unattended in cabins for extended periods. You're responsible for cleaning up after your dog on the property and trails. Excessive noise or damage may result in additional charges. That's it. No complicated rules, no hoops to jump through.
We've hosted hundreds of dogs at this point. Here's what makes the experience work.
Each A-frame cabin has enough space for you and your dog to relax and unwind. The cabins are a 354 square foot open floor plan, with a queen bed, sleeper sofa, coffee bar, and bathroom.
The private balcony becomes a favorite spot for most dogs. Elevated above the trees, with views of the greenway and the river, it's a small outdoor space for them to get some fresh air.
Climate control matters too. Asheville summers get hot, and Asheville winters get cold. Your dog stays comfortable regardless of conditions outside.

Wrong Way sits along the French Broad River Greenway, which means your dog has immediate access to walking trails without getting in the car. Morning walks, evening strolls, middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks; the greenway is right there.
The property has green space called the Meadow that’s available for quick (on-property) outings. You're not navigating a parking lot or searching for a random patch of grass.
We're an outdoor hotel. Guests here are generally outdoorsy, active, and dog-friendly themselves. Your dog won't be the only one on the property, and you won't feel like an outsider for traveling with a pet.
Our staff likes dogs. That's not a policy; it's just true.
Asheville is one of the more dog-friendly destinations in the South. Here are our highlights.
The greenway runs directly past the property. It's paved, flat, and dogs are welcome on leash. You can walk for miles along the river corridor, connecting to Carrier Park and the River Arts District.
Good for: Daily walks, morning runs with your dog, casual exploration.
Most trails in the Asheville area allow leashed dogs. A few favorites:
Bent Creek Trail System (~15 minutes) Multiple loops through forest terrain. Moderate difficulty, well-maintained. Dogs love the creek crossings.
Carolina Mountain Trail at the Arboretum (~15 minutes) Easy to moderate trails through the North Carolina Arboretum. Dogs allowed on leash; some paved sections. Payment required to enter the Arboretum.
Max Patch (~1 hour) The famous bald-summit hike on the Appalachian Trail. Dogs are welcome on leash. Open meadow at the top means room to relax while you take in the views.
DuPont State Recreational Forest (~50 minutes) Waterfall hikes with dogs allowed. Triple Falls and High Falls trails are popular. Keep dogs leashed and be mindful of crowds at the falls.
Note: Dogs are NOT allowed on trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (with very limited exceptions). Plan accordingly if that's on your itinerary.
Asheville's brewery scene is famously dog-friendly. Many have outdoor patios where dogs are welcome:
Most restaurants with outdoor patios in Asheville accommodate dogs. It's the norm here, not the exception.
Some river outfitters allow dogs on kayak and paddleboard trips. Policies vary, so call ahead. Generally:
If your dog is comfortable on water and takes commands well, a calm paddle on the French Broad can be a highlight of the trip.
More Things to Do in Asheville

A few things to think about before you arrive.
Summer: Hot days, cool evenings. Plan hikes for early morning or evening. Bring extra water for your dog. Watch for signs of overheating. The cabin's AC provides relief after outdoor time.
Winter: Cold, occasionally icy. Some dogs love it; others need a coat. Trails can be muddy or icy at higher elevations. Check conditions before heading out.
Spring/Fall: Ideal hiking weather for dogs. Moderate temperatures, lower humidity. Peak seasons for outdoor activity.
We hope you won't need this, but just in case:
Save these in your phone before you arrive.
