A New Way to Experience the Outdoors
An outdoor hotel is a lodging concept built around one idea: you shouldn't have to choose between comfort and connection to nature.
Traditional hotels keep the outdoors at arm's length. You might get a nice view from your window, but the experience stops there. Campgrounds put you in nature, but comfort takes a back seat. Vacation cabin rentals split the difference, though they often feel isolated, and you're usually on your own for everything.
An outdoor hotel brings these worlds together. You get the amenities and service of a hotel (think climate control, real beds, daily housekeeping, on-site staff) combined with architecture and programming designed to immerse you in the landscape around you.
It's not glamping. It's not a resort. It's something new.
What Makes an Outdoor Hotel Different From...
Traditional Hotels
Hotels prioritize interior spaces: lobbies, restaurants, conference rooms. The building is the experience.
An outdoor hotel flips this. The property, the landscape, the access points to trails and water become the main attraction. The rooms are comfortable, but they're designed to push you outside, not keep you in.
Cabin Rentals
Most cabin rentals are self-service. You book online, get a door code, and figure things out yourself. If something goes wrong, you call a property manager who may or may not respond quickly.
An outdoor hotel operates like a hotel. Staff on-site. Common spaces to gather. Concierge-style recommendations for what to do, where to eat, which trail matches your skill level. The infrastructure of hospitality, applied to an outdoor setting.
Camping and Glamping
Camping means roughing it (or at least pretending to). Glamping adds creature comforts but often feels like a tent with better sheets.
An outdoor hotel provides actual buildings with climate control, private bathrooms, and real beds. You're not "camping with extras." You're staying somewhere designed for comfort that happens to be surrounded by nature.
Who Chooses an Outdoor Hotel?
Outdoor hotels tend to attract people who want adventure without sacrificing sleep quality. A few common profiles:
Couples looking for something different. Anniversary trips, romantic getaways, or just a weekend away that feels more interesting than another downtown hotel.
Groups and families who want shared experiences. Common spaces, on-site activities, and proximity to outdoor adventures make it easier to actually spend time together.
Remote workers and small teams. The combination of high-speed WiFi, comfortable workspaces, and immediate access to nature creates a productive-yet-restorative environment for offsites and retreats.
Pet owners. Many outdoor hotels (including ours) welcome dogs as genuine guests, not reluctant additions.
The Outdoor Hotel Experience at Wrong Way
Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins is Asheville's only outdoor hotel. Here's what that looks like.
The Cabins
Sixteen A-frame cabins elevated 12 to 14 feet above the ground with private balconies overlooking the French Broad River Greenway. Each cabin includes a queen bed, sleeper sofa, private bathroom, mini-fridge, microwave, coffee and tea service, climate control, and high-speed WiFi.
The architecture matters. We call it Scappalachian design: a beautiful mash-up of Appalachian warmth and Scandinavian clean lines. A-frames have analogue features like record players, books, and board games.
The River Lodge
A two-story lodge has an all day coffee shop and bar, as well as meeting spaces for groups. The Canteen (main floor) is a well curated gift shop, and cafe. The Boardroom (loft level) seats 8 for focused work sessions, complete with a 65-inch monitor and private balcony. The Eddy is the lower level event space that seats up to 36 people, and includes an 85” TV, private bathrooms, and a catering kitchen.
The Location
Direct access to the French Broad River Greenway for walking, running, and biking. The river itself is also directly across the street for river activities like kayaking, tubing, and paddle boarding. Downtown Asheville is a 5-minute drive. Biltmore Estate is a short 2-mile drive to the front entrance.
The name "Wrong Way" comes from a local story: the French Broad is one of the few rivers in the world that flows south to north. Raft guides like to say it runs "the wrong way." We took that as inspiration. There's no wrong way to experience the outdoors.
The Details That Matter
- Genuinely pet-friendly. Dogs aren't just tolerated; they're welcomed. No weight limits, no breed restrictions, no side-eye from staff.
- On-site team. Friendly folks available to say howdy, recommend their favorite restaurants or hikes, and solve problems.
- Outdoor programming. Seasonal activities, local partnerships, and curated recommendations based on what's actually good right now.
Is an Outdoor Hotel Right for You?
An outdoor hotel fits if you want:
- Nature access without pitching a tent
- Hotel-level comfort without feeling disconnected from your surroundings
- A home base for adventure that's more than just a place to sleep
- Shared spaces and on-site support, not just a lockbox code
It's not for everyone. If you want room service, valet parking, and a spa, a traditional hotel is probably a better fit. If you want true backcountry solitude, you'll want to head deeper into the mountains. But if you want to wake up in an A-frame cabin, grab a delicious cup of coffee, and be on a trail or in the river within minutes, all while knowing you'll come back to a comfortable bed and a hot shower, an outdoor hotel is worth considering.
