Spring in Asheville

June 4, 2026

The mountains are waking up. Blooms are rolling through the valleys, the French Broad River is warming up, and the trails are calling. Here's your guide to making the most of spring in Asheville from a cabin on the river.

Why Spring Is Asheville's Best-Kept Season

Most people think of Asheville in the fall, when the leaf-peepers descend and every overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway turns into a parking lot. But the locals know something different: spring in Asheville is when this place really comes alive. The crowds are thinner, the temperatures are perfect for being outside, and the mountains put on a show that rivals anything October has to offer. We're talking about waves of wildflowers, blooming rhododendrons, and gardens so full of color you'll forget your phone exists (which, honestly, is kind of the point).

PLAN YOUR SPRING STAY

April in Asheville: Gardens, Trails, and the First Warm Days

April is when the season truly shifts. Daytime temperatures settle into the mid-60s, the trees start filling in, and the whole region takes on that fresh, green-smelling energy that makes you want to be outside all day. Here's what's worth your time:

Biltmore Blooms runs through April and into May, transforming the Biltmore Estate gardens into a massive display of tulips, azaleas, and flowering trees. It's one of the most photographed spring events in the Southeast, and Wrong Way sits just 2 miles from the estate entrance, so you can be there in minutes without fighting for a hotel room downtown.

The North Carolina Arboretum is another springtime standout, with 65 acres of cultivated gardens, a nationally recognized Bonsai Exhibition Garden, and 10 miles of hiking and biking trails winding through the property. The Asheville Orchid Festival typically runs in late April here, and it's worth the visit even if orchids aren't your thing.

On the trail side, April is prime time for waterfall hikes. The creeks and streams are running full from spring rains, which means places like Looking Glass Falls, Catawba Falls, and Skinny Dip Falls are at their most dramatic. May in Asheville: River Season Begins

By May, the French Broad River is warming up and the outfitters start opening for the season. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and whitewater rafting trips become available, and since Wrong Way sits right along the French Broad River greenway, you're already there. Walk out of your cabin, and the river is your backyard.

May also brings the Asheville Herb Festival, the largest herb festival in the Southeast. It's a wonderfully weird, very Asheville event that draws gardeners, foragers, and curious folks from across the region. The Biltmore Estate gardens are still in full bloom through May as well, with late-spring perennials and roses taking over where the tulips left off.

For dog owners, spring is arguably the best time to visit. The temperatures are comfortable for longer hikes, the trails aren't baked by summer heat, and your pup can splash around in the shallower sections of the river. Our dog-friendly cabins mean your whole crew can come along for the trip.

Where to Stay for a Spring Asheville Trip

Here's the thing about spring in Asheville: you don't want to spend it inside a hotel room watching the Weather Channel. You want to be outside, breathing it in, sitting around a fire pit as the sun goes down behind the ridgeline. That's exactly why we built Wrong Way the way we did.

Our modern A-frame cabins sit along the French Broad River greenway, just 1 mile from the River Arts District, 2 miles from the Biltmore Estate, and 3 miles from downtown Asheville. Each cabin comes with a private bathroom, HVAC (because April mornings can still be chilly), a comfortable queen bed, WiFi, a mini-fridge, and a microwave. It's everything you actually need and nothing you don't. No TV, by design. Spring evenings are better spent outside anyway.

Wrong Way is Asheville's only outdoor hotel, which means you get the comfort of a boutique hotel with the spirit of being outdoors. Think of it as the sweet spot between roughing it and room service. Real beds, real bathrooms, real connection to the place you came to see.

Spring Mornings at Wrong Way

There's a rhythm to spring mornings on the river that's hard to describe until you've lived it. The mist lifts off the French Broad just after sunrise. Birds are doing their thing. The air smells like wet earth and blooming things. You step out of your A-frame with a cup of coffee and realize you don't have anywhere to be, and that's the whole point.

Our property is built for this kind of slow, intentional time outside. Gather around the communal fire pit. Take the greenway trail toward the River Arts District and poke around the studios of 200+ working artists. Or just sit. Spring has a way of reminding you that doing less can feel like more. Whether you're here for a weekend adventure, a family trip, or a few quiet days with your dog, the season meets you where you are.
