Every December, somewhere in Asheville, a host counts heads, then counts beds, and the math stops working. Your sister is bringing the kids. Your uncle is bringing the dog. Somebody is headed for an air mattress that slowly loses the argument by three in the morning.
We have a better plan. Consider Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins your extra guest room for the holidays. We sit along the French Broad River, a mile from West Asheville's Haywood Road, two miles from Biltmore Estate and three from downtown. Your people stay close enough for Christmas morning and far enough away that everyone actually sleeps.
Send the family to stay with us, or come stay with us yourself and leave the full house behind for a night. We'll be the guest room that welcomes everyone.
When the House Fills Up for the Holidays
Send the Overflow Down the River
Sixteen private A-frame cabins means the out-of-town crew can spread out without spreading into your home office. Put the grandparents in one cabin and the cousins in another, and everyone shows up at your door rested. It works because we run as an outdoor hotel, with the comfort of a hotel room and the outdoors right outside the door. If you're new to the idea, here's what an outdoor hotel is.
Bigger crews can start with our group and family bookings. If the celebration needs a room of its own, ask about our event spaces for holiday gatherings.
Or Book a Night Off for Yourself
Hosting is a joy, and it is also a lot. Some of our favorite holiday guests are locals who booked one quiet night after the dishes were done. Nobody asks where the extra towels are. If it feels more like a getaway for two, our guide to romantic cabins in Asheville has ideas for the evening.
Close Enough for Christmas Morning
Location matters most when the plan is "back at the house by eight for cinnamon rolls." West Asheville's coffee shops are a mile up the road and downtown is three miles away, so nobody has to choose between a good night's sleep and showing up on time.
It takes some pressure off the guest list, too. When nobody is sleeping on the couch, it gets a lot easier to say yes to the friend flying in late or the college roommate who wants to tag along for a night. More people around the table, fewer people in the hallway at midnight.

What Your Holiday Guests Get in an A-Frame
Real Beds, Private Baths and Heat
Each A-frame cabin has a queen bed, a queen-sized sleeper for an extra guest or two, a private bathroom, heating and air conditioning, and high-speed Wi-Fi. A mini-fridge, microwave, electric kettle and complimentary coffee and tea cover the early mornings. Step out onto your private deck with a warm mug before the day gets going.
Room for the Family Dog, Too
Holiday travel with a dog usually means boarding or a long search. We keep dog-friendly cabins, so the family pup can come along and stay out from underfoot at the host's house. The French Broad River Greenway runs right across the street for the morning walk.
Why Our Cabins Skip the Television
Our cabins don't have TVs. We left them out on purpose so guests would spend time outside, talk with each other and rest better, and you can read more about why in the story behind Wrong Way. Over the holidays it turns out to be a small gift. Card games come out, books get finished and conversations run late.
Holiday Plans a Few Miles From Your Cabin
Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum
The North Carolina Arboretum turns its gardens into a walk-through light show of more than a million lights each holiday season, running from mid-November into early January. Tickets are sold per vehicle, so check the Winter Lights page and pick your night early.
It's an outdoor walk through the gardens, so dress for a December evening. The Arboretum sets up cocoa stands along the route, which makes a good halfway point for little legs and cold hands.
Christmas at Biltmore, Two Miles Away
Biltmore dresses America's largest home for the season, and the evening Candlelight visits are a separate ticket. If that's on your list, start with our guide to planning a Candlelight Christmas evening. You can book Biltmore tickets through us, and our page on cabins near Biltmore Estate covers the short drive.
Downtown Skating and West Asheville
Downtown Asheville sets up a holiday ice rink and winter wonderland from late November into January, with skating, lights and hot chocolate. Closer to the cabins, our guide to 48 hours in West Asheville covers coffee, food and shops along Haywood Road, and our Asheville explore map pins the rest.
A Slow Morning on the French Broad River
The best holiday plan might be the slowest one. Take a coffee across the street to the greenway, watch the French Broad roll north the way it always has, and let the day sort itself out. When everyone is ready, the host's house is a short drive away and the cinnamon rolls are still warm.
The dinner and the presents happen at the house. The cabin is where you catch your breath in between, which is exactly what a good guest room is for.
Book Your Holiday Guest Cabins
Holiday dates go quickly, and we'd much rather your family land here than on the living room floor. Look over our current offers before you book, browse the full Wrong Way FAQs, or contact the front desk if you're lining up several cabins for one crew.
